BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE
Meeting – Tuesday, April 28, 2009
Chair – Amy Alpert

Present:  Amy Alpert, Mary Ellen Halliwell, Sara Fiore, Jan Kendall, Sandra Power, Marcia Lambert, Bev Moustakis, Ellen Talkowsky, Judith Wolfe  

Minutes of the meeting held March 31, 2009 were approved as written

Old Business

Clean Sweeps -  Ellen led a discussion regarding supplies to be available for  the event including pizza for 300 (we pay fifty percent of the cost, 40 gallons of water to be available.  McDonalds has been approached and Ritas is to provide ices of different tastes.  Gloves, bags and lunch tickets will be ready.  Northside Carting will pick up trash where collected.  Recyclables will be gathered in blue bags and brought to a central site on the Common as an awareness exhibit.    

2.  Plant Sale – Darlene of Flowers by Darlene is to have a list of available plants on May 1st.  Jan volunteered to co-chair planning for the event with Judith.  Sandi reported that Delores Johnson will donate perennial starts from her garden.  Committee members will harvest the starts and pot them for sale at the event.  Sandi reported the availability of  used garden tools that  could be offered for sale.   Ellen has sent publicity to SATV and a flyer has been developed.  Plans were made to have the flyers distributed to various neighborhoods around the Common on Friday, May 5th.  A cash box will be established.  Jan and Judith will meet with Ellen to further prepare for the May 16th event.

3.  Tree-mendous Event – Ellen reported that Donna Michaud met with Jennifer Bell of Main Streets.  Ellen has reserved Old Town Hall for the second weekend in December.  The weekend is still in the planning stages. The event is to be a money raiser with trees to be raffled as in the past.

4.  Traffic Islands – Sandi reported the status of traffic island sponsorship.  Amy noted the importance of focusing efforts on the downtown islands.  It was suggested that traffic island pictures be put up on the website..

5.  M.B.T.A.  -  Mary Ellen reported that the permits necessary for cleanup work for Clean Sweeps and to plant flowers and greenery have been granted.  An insurance certificate is also in place.   

6.  Newspaper Box Ordinance Report – Marcia announced that the Ordinance has been passed.  Marcia and Jason Silva are to review and revise the list of boxes. They will also get the Ordinance distributed.  

7.  Artist Row update – Ellen and Mary Ellen are to meet with Jason Silva on May 5th.  RCG is contributing Five Hundred ($500.00) Dollars to the Committee for use in planting the site.  Mary Ellen’s goal is to have Artist Row completed by Memorial Day

8.  Smokers Receptacle Urns  - Ellen reported that there will be a lottery to decide which merchants will have the use of the six Urns purchased for this purpose.  Those interested in participating in the lottery will complete a form that commits the winners to the ongoing maintenance of the receptacles.
