2011 Green Salem Business Challenge Winners Announced!
Green Salem Business Challenge winners have been selected from nearly 50 participants in a program aimed to promote sound, environmental “green” practices and to acknowledge companies currently “going green” by incorporating effective green practices into their businesses.
Awards were presented by Mayor Kimberley Driscoll at Salem Old Town Hall, on September 15th. Representative John Keenan and Salem Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Rinus Oosthoek, were also present to congratulate the winners and participants.
A collaborative effort of the Salem Chamber of Commerce, the City of Salem, SalemRecycles, Salem Renewable Energy Task Force, and North Shore Transportation Management Association (TMA), the Green Salem Businesses Challenge launched in the summer of 2010. Challenge participants were required to take the Green Salem Business Pledge to do everything reasonable and practical to reduce their environmental footprint, adopt green best practices, and increase environmental awareness among their employees, patrons, and the general public. The pledge was followed by a comprehensive survey of participants existing green business strategies and future environmental plans and goals. All businesses that took part in the challenge will receive a window sticker designating them as a Green Salem Business Challenge Participant. Special
certificates from the Mayor and window decals were given to the Challenge winners.
The honorees by category are as follows:
Category One (1 owner-employee)
Category Two (1 to 5 employees)
Honorable Mention: Green Clean
Category Three (6 to 50 employees)
Category Four (51 or more employees)
“We were pleased with the diversity of businesses that self-selected to take the green business challenge. Salem organizations that people may not typically think of as “green” are finding creative ways to incorporate environmental best practices into to their businesses and educate and reward employees and patrons. They understand that green is good for the bottom line and good for Salem’s environmental health. ” states Rinus Oosthoek, Executive Director of the Salem Chamber of Commerce.
The Green Salem Business Challenge is part of the City of Salem’s comprehensive environmental sustainability plan. In May of 2010, Salem was designated as a Green Community by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
