The Salem Redevelopment Authority (SRA) and its Design Review Board (DRB) have played an active role in the redevelopment of downtown Salem since it was created in 1962. Over the past four decades, the SRA has made significant contributions to the revitalization of the Central Business District in downtown Salem.
Critical to this success is its commitment to preserving the social fabric and architectural heritage of the City.
The SRA requires that all improvements to the exterior of a structure and any changes to signage to properties located within the Urban Renewal Areas undergo design review. The SRA utilizes their Urban Renewal Plans in that design review. The Commercial Design Guidelines are intended to supplement the design frameworks established by the Urban Renewal Plans and the SRA staff are available to help you as you put together your application.
The following outline the review process and requirements for the different types of projects undertaken in the Urban Renewal Areas.
The Salem Redevelopment Authority meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. For more information, contact the Department of Planning & Community Development at 978-745-9595, Ext. 5685.
