The following activities and programs are hosted by the Council on Aging. Unless otherwise noted, they are intended for those 60 years of age and older.
THANKSGIVING EXTRAVAGANZA
Date: November 20th, 11:00 a.m.
The seventh annual Salem High School Thanksgiving Extravaganza will be held at the school’s auditorium on Willson Street. Entertainment will be provided by the SHS String and Jazz Band and Chorus, as well as by the Council on Aging’s “Goldentones.” Guests will feast on a traditional Thanksgiving dinner prepared by the students. As always, the highlight of the dinner will be the lively conversation between students and seniors dining together. Transportation will be provided. CARMEN THOMPSON VARIETY SHOW
Date: Thursday, Dec. 4, 5-8 p.m
The fifth annual Carmen Thompson Variety show will be held Thursday, Dec. 4, 5-8 p.m., at the Senior Center. Once again we will create a “theatre in the round” in the dining room. Holiday punch, along with an assortment of hot and cold hors d’oeuvres will be served in a separate room before the show. Coffee and pastries will be served at intermission. The Variety Show is dedicated to Carmen Thompson, former musical director of the Goldentones, chairperson of the COA Advisory Board, a volunteer and supportive friend of the COA. Tickets are $10 and are available at the Senior Center.
REMEMBRANCE SERVICE
Date: Thursday, Dec. 11, at 10 a.m
The seventh annual Candle-Lighting and Remembrance Service will be held Thursday, Dec. 11, at 10 a.m. The gathering is held to remember dear friends and family members no longer with us. Music will be presented by the Goldentones. Twelve candles will be lit, each representing a month of the year. A memorial DVD of various friends and family members will be shown. Anyone wishing to include a love one on the DVD may bring a picture to Lynne Barrett no later than Thursday, Nov. 19. The cost is $2 per picture. HOLIDAY DINNER

The Ward 2 Social Club will host a delightful holiday dinner, in November, in honor of Salem seniors. For information, call 978-744-0924.
TWELFTH NIGHT CELEBRATION

Time: 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Fee: To be determinedA Twelfth Night celebration, a tradition that traces back thousands of years to festivals held 12 days after the winter solstice, will be held at the Senior Center. Entertainment, a special lunch and lots of surprises will be in store for guests as they embark on a new year.
WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP
WITH PAULA BEAULIEU

Have you always wanted to paint but thought you weren’t creative or couldn’t paint like the masters? Learn to reconnect with and express your own innate creativity in a supportive atmosphere where you can learn to be more in touch with the child you once were. Paula Beaulieu is a certified art educator and artist. She has been a painter of watercolors for more than 25 years. There is a minimum of nine and maximum of 15 participants needed to run the class. PSYCHIC WORKSHOP

Linnea, psychic medium of the past, present and future, will present two-hour workshops at the Senior Center beginning in 2009.
SPECIAL TRIPS

SALEM HISTORY BOOK FOR SALE
For more than two years, a dedicated group of seniors, under the direction of Linda Conrad, has been sharing their personal perspective of the changes that have taken place in Salem during their lifetimes. Drawing on their memories, they have written "Personal Perspectives of a Changing Salem," a poignant, sometimes humorous, always insightful book. You may purchase the book for $12.00 at Salem Council on Aging.
HAPPY LUNCH BUNCH
Age: 60 and older
Date: To be announced, monthly
Fee: Free
Participants will meet at a different Salem restaurant each month. This program is designed to promote Salem businesses, while guests enjoy a wonderful and affordable social activity. The restaurant of the month designs a specific menu for the group, which includes entrée, dessert, tax and gratuity. Reservations and prepayment are required. MANICURES AND PEDICURES
Manicures and Pedicures are now being offered at the Senior Center. Registered Cosmetologist Ann Elizabeth Weston will be at the Senior Center the first and third Tuesday of each month from 9:30 to 3. The cost of a manucure is $15.00; a pedicure is $20. Manicure appointments are 30 minutes; pedicures are 45 minures. Nail polish will be provided. Call Ann, at 508-527-0079, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to schedule an appontment. She will also come to your home if neccesary.
PODIATRIST
Dr. Wayne McCullough will offer podiatry services in January on the 3rd and 17th from 10 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. at the Senior Center. Call 978-744-0924 for an appointment. The fee is $25.00. Dr. McCullough will also make house calls on Mondays. For information you may call 978-549-6818.
WRITER’S GROUP
Date: Every other Monday
Time: 2-3:30 p.m.
Fee: Free
Participants meet at the Senior Center to talk about writing and share their work, with an emphasis on putting memories of Salem into words.

MAH-JONGG
Date: Mondays
Time: 1-3 p.m.

Adults are invited to try their hand at this ancient game that requires skill, coupled with fortune and wit.

CREATIVE STITCHERY
Date: Tuesdays starting September 23, for ten weeks.
Time: 1-3 p.m.
Fee: $25
Anyone who wants to learn a new stitching skill is welcomed to this class, which includes counted cross stitch, crewel embroidery, needlepoint, Brazilian embroidery, ribbon embroidery, hard anger, Assissi embroidery, etc. A short recess will take place in the month of December; classes will resume in January 2009.
BASIC BALLROOM DANCING
Date: Thursdays
Time: 6-7 p.m.; optional warm-up at 5:45 p.m.
Fee: $50 per person
Participants will take their first steps toward learning the waltz, foxtrot, swing, rumba, cha-cha and tango. This class is held at the Senior Center and is open to the public. Singles and couple are welcome.

BRIDGE
Fun, friendly games of bridge are held Fridays, 12:30 p.m. at the Senior Center. Players are needed and newcomers are encouraged to join in.
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
Age: 60 and older
Date: Last Tuesday of each month
Time: 11 a.m.
Birthday celebrants get a free lunch at the Senior Center. The party features entertainment, a 50/50 raffle, cake, cards and singing. Call no later than a week before the party to register for lunch and/or to sign up for transportation.
CHAIR YOGA
Age: 60 and older
Date: Tuesdays
Time: 9:15 a.m.
Fee: $3 per class
Participants will enjoy the benefits of yoga with the use of a chair. Classes will be held at the Senior Center, 5 Broad St.

TAI CHI

A t’ai chi group, under the direction of Ben Hernando, will meet at the Senior Center. Variations of t’ai chi are well known as the slow-motion routines that groups of people practice every morning in parks across China. It is intended to teach awareness of one’s own balance and an appreciation of one’s ability to moderate extremes of behavior and attitude, at both mental and physical levels.

BINGO

SENIOR DAY AT THE BLACK CAT CAFÉ
Date: Tuesdays Senior Day specials are offered every Tuesday in the Black Cat Café at Salem High School, Willson Street. Council on Aging vans will be available to transport anyone interested in dining there. You may get picked up at home or drive to the Senior Center for departure from the parking lot. For those wishing to use a van, call Amy Walsh, 978-744-0924, ext. 19, two business days in advance (no later than Friday for a Tuesday lunch).
COOKBOOK SALE
The Council on Aging is preparing a taste-tempting cookbook, featuring favorite recipes from members of the community. Anyone, regardless of age, can submit a recipe. Proceeds from cookbook sales will help fund projects and activities for senior citizens. The cookbook will hold a meeting for all who are interested on Sept. 8th at 2:00pm. INTER-GENERATIONAL: The following activities are designed to be shared by children and senior citizens.
KNITTING
Ages: 6-12 and senior citizens
Dates: February and April school vacation week
Time: 10-11:30 a.m.
Fee: $5
Salem seniors will teach knitting to children at the Senior Center, 5 Broad St. At the end of the week participants will celebrate with a luncheon. Pre-registration is required.
