Recently the Salem School budget was hit with a $4.7 million budget deficit. As a result, 29 teachers have been laid off as part of an overall reduction in personnel which totals 80 school employees. In response to the budget crisis and layoffs, City officials have been inundated with calls from parents, teachers, members of the business community, higher-ed and cultural institutions, all offering to help stop mid-year teacher reductions and provide additional assistance. Efforts are underway to save regular classroom teaching positions from the slated
reductions, beginning at the elementary school level, to minimize direct effects in the classroom.
To facilitate the many offers of donations, Mayor Driscoll is initiating the creation of a Salem Education Fund, where contributions, which are tax deductible, can be made directly to the effort to off-set teacher reductions. Every $20,000 that we raise can help reduce the number of positions being cut.
