Portable “A-Frame” Signs

Businesses have until September 19, 2011, to obtain a permit for existing portable signs. Application fees for existing portable signs will be waived until this date.

Applicants need to complete a Sign Permit Application. A complete application packet includes the following:
  • Sign permit application form (signed by sign owner and property owner).
  • Proof of adequate liability insurance.
  • Brief cover letter describing the proposal. Be sure to specify the letter style and size in inches. State whether or not the entrance is used by more than one business.
  • Scaled drawing of sign or photograph of existing sign with dimensions.
  • Color samples (actual paint chips or Pantone numbers or photograph of existing sign).
  • Contextual photograph(s) of building and sidewalk showing where portable sign is proposed.
  • Scaled plan showing business entrance and proposed sign location. Indicate distance from entrance and sign clearances.
Click here for examples of a completed sign permit application form, cover letter, and plan.

Within the Urban Renewal Areas, review and approval is required by the Salem Redevelopment Authority and its Design Review Board. Click here for an overview of the process.

Please contact the Department of Planning and Community Development at 978 619-5685 with any questions.
