TITLE: Code Enforcement Officer
DEPARTMENT: Health Department
POSITION STATUS: Full-time, AFSCME Local 1818 position
REPORTS TO: Health Agent
Senior Sanitarian
SALARY: STEP I STEP II STEP III
$847.16 $880.08 $914.34
DUTIES:
In accordance with the State Sanitary and Environmental Codes and established procedures, performs a variety of inspections designed to ensure enforcement of the codes. Inspects dwellings for fitness of human habitation.
Investigates nuisances, improper disposal of rubbish, illegal dumping, etc. Conducts investigations in support of rodent control programs and provides information on pest control.
Investigates lead paint violations in support of lead paint poison control programs.
Prepares reports of findings and maintains adequate records. Reports violations to supervisor with recommendations for corrective action. Writes report of inspection/order or notice of non-compliance and conducts reinspection.
Monitors and enforces a mandatory recycling program and three receptacle per week solid waste disposal limit.
In any situation of non-compliance and inspection disapproval, prepares material for District and Superior Court presentation with assistance from supervisor as necessary. May testify in court cases as expert witness.
Provides education to residents regarding compliance with codes and regulations
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of state and city laws pertaining to housing code. Ability to recognize and report any and all sanitary violations; ability to speak and write effectively. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Ability to develop effective working relationship with co-workers and the public.
Working knowledge of Microsoft word, Excel, and Outlook.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicant must have:
1) A minimum of an Associates degree from an accredited college, and one year of technical or professional experience in the field of public or environmental health, or
2) A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college.
Valid Massachusetts driver’s license required.
Strong skills in organization, communication, and writing.
Fluency in Spanish strongly preferred
