PLANT SALE - MAY 17
Plans Underway for Beautification Committee Plant Sale

Mayor Kimberley Driscoll and the Salem Beautification Committee announced today that plans are underway for the first annual City of Salem Beautification Committee plant sale which will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2008 (Rain date:  May 18th) on the Salem Common from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Regarding the plant sale, Mayor Driscoll commented, "A plant sale is a perfect fundraiser for the Beautification Committee to undertake. Not only will it raise money for city-wide beautification projects, but your plant purchases will beautify our neighborhoods and the entire Salem community."

Annuals, some perennials, small azalea and hydrangea bushes, and hanging baskets will be on sale.  Flowers by Darlene, a Salem business, will be providing the plants.  You will also be able to take a chance to win gardening gift baskets donated by the Beautification Committee and the Salem Garden Club.  There is plenty of space in the Common for children to play, as parents go shopping and spring water and snacks will also be available for purchase.

Members of the newly-formed Recycling Committee Task Force will also be selling
rain barrels, composters, water conservation garden spray nozzles and recycling bins.

Roberta Clement, Chairperson of the event, stated, "This is the first of what we hope will be an annual fundraiser for the Beautification Committee.   We need your support to make this a success, so please join us on the Common and purchase a beautiful, flowering hanging basket, and plants for your garden, window boxes and containers."

Salem residents and businesses will also be able to register for the City of Salem's Window Box Competition that day.  So it really is one stop shopping – pick out your flowers, buy a rain barrel and sign-up for the window box competition all at one time.  There will be something for everyone, and all the funds raised will be used for beautification efforts throughout the city.
