Roadway RE-Grading to Begin next week
bridge Street 1A Reconstruction project
SALEM, MA – Next week, the City’s ongoing Bridge Street 1A Reconstruction Project will move into its most important phase – the re-grading of the road. “The Contractor, Newport Construction, of Nashua, New Hampshire, plans to work in segments of approximately 300 feet of road as the re-grading is performed” says MassDOT’s Resident Engineer, Bernie LaVita, who is responsible for the day to day oversight of Newport’s activities.
Starting on Monday, July 26, at the northern end of Bridge Street, Newport will close and excavate the roadway, between Ames Street and Pierce Avenue. Excavation will take place one lane at a time to allow vehicular traffic to pass the work zone in an alternating, two-way traffic pattern. When a lane is completed, a ramp will be constructed to allow vehicular traffic to pass. At the end of the day, both lanes will have been excavated, re-graded and re-opened to traffic. The work will continue for the next two days in the same manner, for the same approximate distances. On Thursday, July 29, the contractor will fine grade and compact the weeks work area and binder paving will be installed on Friday “Re-grading will then continue in a southerly direction on Bridge Street” stated
Mr. LaVita, “following the same sequence of work, a week at a time, until completed”. As with any construction project, weather may impact the contractors ability to work and cause delays.
When Newport is working during this phase of the project, vehicular traffic will be managed by Salem Police details. Ramps will be provided at every driveway or parking lot to ensure vehicular access is not interrupted.
The City Engineering Department will be coordinating with MassDOT’s Resident Engineer, Bernie LaVita. Mr. LaVita’s telephone number is 978.804.0690, please call him if you have any questions relative to the project
Residents and businesses are reminded that Bridge Street is an active construction zone, even after work hours or on weekends or holidays. Drivers should use caution and reduce speed when travelling on Bridge Street.
