Salem ramps up for McCabe Marina boat ramp ribbon cutting

SALEM, MA – The public is invited to celebrate the grand opening of the new boat ramp at McCabe Marina on Monday, July 26 at 10 a.m.

Before the repairs, the boat ramp was in disrepair with the concrete crumbling and the ramp itself beginning to lose its footing. Boaters using the ramp often had difficulty gaining access to the water. In fact, the old ramp could only be used by boaters during high tides and was in jeopardy of being closed entirely if repairs did not take place.

“The new ramp at McCabe Marina has been a long time coming,” said Mayor Kimberley Driscoll. “This new ramp will be a huge improvement for boaters and others who want to enjoy the marina.”

Eight years ago, Salem was promised funding for the ramp project by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Over the years, the funding was reduced or removed from the budget until recently; through the efforts of the Governor’s Office, State Representative John Keenan, State Senator Fred Berry, Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game Commissioner Mary Griffin and Massachusetts Office of Fishing and Boating Access Director Jack Sheppard it was secured.

Work on the $500,000 Kernwood Ramp began in April and wrapped up in July. The ramp will now be open to the public, with a $5 fee for boats to dock.

Along with Mayor Driscoll, State Senator Fred Berry, State Representative John Keenan, and Fish and Game Commissioner Mary Griffin will be at the ribbon-cutting.
