Youth Recreation:
WINTER BASKETBALL LEAGUE
Age: Boys and girls, 9-15 years
Date: Registration is Thursday, Sept. 24
Time: 5-8 p.m.
Fee: $35

KAYAK DAY PROGRAM
Age: 10-15 years
Date: Oct. 3 & 4
Time: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Fee: $175
This is a skills and confidence building clinic. Topics include: basic paddle techniques, wet exits, buddy rescues, self rescues, basic kayak safety, preparation for touring and evaluating marine and weather conditions. VIDEO BOOT CAMP
Age: 8-14 years
Dates: Wednesdays, Oct. 7 to Oct. 28
Time: 3:30-5 p.m.
Fee: Free to Salem children.
Learn the basic operation of Salem Access TV’s digital camcorders and the basics of video editing. Participants will use footage they shoot themselves to create a short program, where they call the shots. Class limited to 10. Classes will be held at the Salem Access TV studio, 285 Derby St. Instructor: Patrick Kennedy.
 
YOUTH TENNIS
Age: 6-12 years
Date: Wednesdays, Oct. 7 to Oct. 28
Time: 5-6 p.m.
Fee: $20
Learn the elements of the tennis court and how to keep score. Lessons will focus on the proper way to serve and hit, as well as back-hand, forehand and volley strokes. Held at the Salem Willows Tennis Courts. Instructor: Julia Harrington.

FALL COLORS ON A BARREL STAVE
Date: Wednesdays, Sept. 30 to Nov. 18 (no class Oct. 21 or Nov. 11)
Time: 6-7:30 p.m.
Fee: $65, plus materials
In this one-stroke painting class, students will paint on a wooden barrel stave, using Acrylic paints. Students will paint a design of beautiful leaves, flowers and pumpkins in all the colors of fall. Your stave can be hung anywhere in your home to display. All are welcome to join in the fun! Barrel staves can be purchased through the instructor on the first night of class. Held at the Senior Center, 5 Broad Street. Instructor: Jeanette Lerner.
 
WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP WITH PAULA BEAULIEU
Date: Fridays, Oct. 2 to Nov. 6
Time: 1:45-3:45 p.m.
Fee: $72, includes supplies
Have you always wanted to paint but thought you weren’t creative or couldn’t paint like the masters? Learn to reconnect with and express your own innate creativity in a supportive atmosphere where you can learn to be more in touch with the child you once were. There is a minimum of nine participants needed to run the class. Pre-registration is required. Held at the Senior Center, 5 Broad Street. Instructor, Paula Beaulieu, certified art educator with 25+ years of watercolor experience.
 
OIL PAINTING
Date: Fridays, Oct. 2 to Nov. 13
Time: 10 a.m. to noon
Fee: $40, includes supplies
Oil painting begins its ninth year at the Senior Center, 5 Broad Street. Beginners and those who have not painted in a while are welcome. Instruction includes getting started, sketching, mixing colors, and tips on painting. Have fun in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and be surprised at how much talent you have! Instructor: Peggy Towey, professional painter with 20+ years experience.
 
LEARN TO PAINT SUNFLOWERS
Date: Tuesday, October 6
Time: 9:30-11:30 a.m.
Fee: $10, includes materials
In this class you will learn to paint decorative sunflowers using Acrylic paints. This class is for the first time painter and for those who want to learn a new, simple, method of bending, shading and highlighting. Students will learn paint technique, loading the brush and paint strokes. A class project of painting a sunflower design on a clay pot will be completed. All supplies for this workshop will be provided by the instructor. Come join in the fun and surprise yourself with your talent! Pre-registration is required. ZUMBA
Age: 16 and older
Date: Mondays, Oct. 5 to Nov. 16 (no class Oct. 12)
Time: 6-7 p.m.
Fee: $60
A fun and motivating way to get in shape. Latin-based rhythms and dance styles make-up this workout that is sweeping the globe. Great music in an inspiring atmosphere. BASIC BALLROOM DANCING

MAKE IT AND TAKE IT FLORAL DESIGN
Date: Tuesdays, Oct. 13, 20, 27
Time: 6:30-8 p.m.
Fee: $80
Learn the secrets of professional floral designers in this unique series of classes. Everything you need will be provided, including fresh flowers and step-by-step instructions. The first week you will make a basket arrangement using fresh long-lasting flowers set in oasis. The second week you will make a topiary design using fresh flowers and a reusable pot. The last week you will make a Halloween arrangement. Pre-registration is required, no experience necessary. Held at the Senior Center, 5 Broad Street. Instructor, Laurie Marino, floral designer.
 
DIGITAL CAMERA BASICS
Date: Tuesday, October 13
Time: 9:30 – 11:30am

This quick 2-hour workshop will get you using that digital camera! You’ll learn basic digital camera controls, how to properly hold your camera, basic digital camera terms, and features and menu options. Please remember to bring your camera. Pre-registration is required. Limited to 10 students. Held at the Senior Center, 5 Broad Street. Instructor: Tracy Milkay of Milkay Photography.
 
QUILTING
Age: 16 and older
Date: Thursdays, Oct. 15 to Dec. 10 (no class Nov. 26)
Time: 6-8:00 p.m.
Fee: $50, plus materials
Come discover the magic of quilting. Turn ordinary pieces of fabric into a beautiful handmade quilt or wall hanging. If you have all ready started a quilt, bring it along. This class is designed for all quilting levels. Held at the Senior Center, 5 Broad Street. Instructor: April MacPhail.
