HOME ENERGY & WATER CONSERVATION

Paul Marquis, from the City of Salem Department of Planning & Community Development, will be at the Senior Center, discussing “Home Energy and Water Conservation.” Learn the basics of home energy and water conservation to reduce your utility expenses. You’ll hear about measures you can take on your own, without professional help, and often at little or no cost. Many of these measures apply to both homeowners and renters alike, so all are welcome.
The City of Salem and the state Green Communities Division will provide some of the basic supplies at no cost to participants. In addition, there will be several door prizes consisting of more complete conservation kits.
We will also briefly discuss more comprehensive conservation programs that are being delivered by the City, at no cost to Salem owners and renters. The program is open to all Salem residents, but first preference will be given to seniors. Light refreshments will be served.

Do your children like a challenge, or would you like to perk up their math skills? Volunteer Steve Dibble has taught and supervised chess for more than 1,000 children over the past 20 years. They will become skilled at playing the “oldest game in the world” against new friends in a fun, relaxed setting. No knowledge of chess is needed and children of all abilities are invited. Bring a couple of friends and sign up together. Many of these children go on to play well in Salem's Annual Chess Tournament held on Saturday, March 31.

Participants will be introduced to Rasamaya yoga, which features smooth, flowing transitions. This class will include movements and postures that stretch and strengthen feet, Achilles tendons, hamstrings, glutes, back, and upper body, and open the hips. Exercises complement serious running or other aerobic exercise programs and help avoid injuries. Each class includes Sun Salutations, postures to strengthen the entire body, and core work. These allow participants to develop muscle strength without a formal weightlifting program. The small group setting allows for individual attention. Modifications will be given for each exercise to make it more or less challenging. A side effect may even be brand-new "6 pack abs" for the coming racing season! The Salem Park, Recreation & Community Services Department is proud to present the third annual Olde Salem Greens Snowshoe Classic. The course will be approximately 5k and include both double and single-track trails. A limited number of loaner snowshoes will be available for a small fee, courtesy of Dion Snowshoes. SALEM RACE SERIES
Salem Park, Recreation & Community Road Race Series 2012
The Salem Race Series gives runners a chance to experience a wide variety of seasonal events, from the chill of January to the heat of August, from a one mile run to a half-marathon, from a flat course to a cross-country run, we’ve even added a snowshoe race for 2012. All races start and finish in Salem and support The City of Salem Recreation programs for all ages, as well as other local charities, so your hard work will not only be rewarded, but will supplement continuing programs such as this in the future.
A twist is being added to the 5th annual Salem Race Series in 2012!
There will be eight racing events offered, and two levels of finishers:
Competitor: Complete 6 of 8 races and receive a running cap with the race series logo.
Finisher: Complete all 8 races and receive a running jacket with the race series logo.
The 2012 race series includes:
1) Sunday, January 1: Frosty Four New Years Day Race 10 a.m. 4 mile, relatively flat course, some rolling hills. In partnership with the Wicked Running Club; a portion of proceeds support youth scholarships.
2) Saturday, January 7: 3rd Annual Olde Salem Greens Snow Shoe Classic 5k snowshoe run through Olde Salem Greens Golf Course, a portion of proceeds to benefit Salem Park, Recreation & Community Services.
3) Sunday, March 25: 5k Cross-Country Run at Olde Salem Greens 9 a.m. 5k, hilly and challenging course. A portion of proceeds benefit Salem High School Cross Country team.
4) Friday, July 13: 2nd Annual Miles Over the Moon 8 p.m. 4 mile, flat course through the historic district of Salem. A portion of proceeds support local high school track programs.
5) Friday, August 17: The Derby Street Mile 7 p.m. One mile, flat and fast course; great family run. A portion of proceeds benefit Salem Youth Basketball.
6) Saturday, September 22: Wicked Half Marathon 8 a.m. 13.1 mile loop through Salem and Marblehead. In partnership with B&S Fitness.
7) Saturday, October 27: Run with the Devil 8 a.m. 6.66 miles through Salem, starting at Salem Willows Park. In partnership with B&S Fitness.
8) Thursday, November 22: Wild Turkey 5 Mile Run 8 a.m. Thanksgiving Day, fairly flat course along scenic waterfront route. A portion of proceeds benefit Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem.

BENCH DONATIONS

COMMUNITY APPRECIATION AWARDS NIGHT
The Park & Recreation Commission will hold its fourth annual Community Appreciation Awards Night on Wednesday, January 25 to honor businesses, organizations and individuals who have made contributions to support its efforts. DOG PARK The Salem Dog Park is located at Leslie’s Retreat Park on the North River, off North Street. A yearly Pooch Pass is required. They may be purchased during office hours at the Park, Recreation & Community Services Dept., 5 Broad St., for $25. Proceeds are dedicated to maintaining and improving the Dog Park. For the safety of park users, to purchase a Pooch Pass you must present your town/city dog license, documentation from your vet that your dog is current on rabies and distemper, and is spayed or neutered. The Dog Park was built by Salem Play Areas for Canine Exercise (SPACE), a 501(c)(3) non-profit group that continues to work to improve the park. ICE-SKATING RINK
If the weather allows, the Park, Recreation & Community Services Department will have an ice-rink set up on Salem Common. The rink will be open to Salem residents. There is no charge, but you must bring your own skates.
YOUTH COACH?CERTIFICATION
The Park, Recreation & Community Services Department is a local chapter of the National Youth Sports Coaches Association and provides certification classes for youth sports coaches in Salem. We have worked with Salem Youth Basketball and Little League Baseball, certifying more than 100 youth coaches in Salem. To arrange for a certification class for your organization, call 978-744-0180.
