AWARD RECEIPTENTS

Salem Community Gardens
Lisa Spence,
Salem Community Gardens formed in the spring of 2007.~ The hard work of Lisa Spence, Stacia Kraft, Duncan Cox,
Chip & Shannon Bott, and Leslie Tuttle~got the community garden off the ground.~  Between fundraising, creating the gardens, and designing the website, these key people brought the whole project together.

Salem Community Gardens hopes to plant an orchard, as well as start bee keeping this summer as part of furthering expansion at Mack Park.~ This spring they hope to identify a second location in Salem and to add another community garden to the fold with the support of another neighborhood.

Salem Jazz and Soul Festival
Mission
The Salem Jazz and Soul Festival provide free concerts with the mission of raising money in support of music education programs.  In 2008, the Jazz and Soul Festival raised $6,000 for music education, more than twice the amount raised in 2007.  At the 2008 festival, dozens of musicians performed at the free concert held in Salem.  More then 5,000 people enjoyed the event, while over a hundred volunteered in support of the event.

Rebel Shakespeare
Keri Cahill, Christine Geiger
Christine Geiger contacted the department this past summer with the goal of putting together some performances of Romeo and Juliet by the Rebel Shakespeare Company, directed by Keri Cahill. Rebel Shakespare has been directing camps for the past four summers at Winter Island and wanted to bring the show around the city. They preformed at Mary Jane Lee Park, Palmer Cove and at the Senior Center on 5 Broad st. The show was free admission and well attended. We can only hope they will continue with these public performances each summer!!

Sail Salem
David Smith
Sail Salem is a non-profit community boating program.  In the summer of 2008, the program introduced two hundred children to sailing for only $1.00.~ The program provides a fun, safe, and accessible environment that promotes positive life skills such as; integrity, sound judgment, teamwork and environmental awareness through the sport of sailing.~

Perry & Perry Attorneys at Law
Carol Perry
Carol Perry, of Perry and Perry Attorneys at Law, on Front Street here in Salem, has been one of the top sponsors and supporters of the Wild Turkey Race. This race has gained popularity over the past five years, becoming the top road race on the North Shore.  The road race has grown from three hundred runners to nearly eleven hundred over the past five years. Carol is familiar with road races, a runner herself, as well as race director for the Paul Perry Race in Salem. The department cannot thank her enough for her support and sponsorship.

Ernst & Young
Jacqueline Washburn
This past year we were fortunate enough to receive a request from Jacqueline Washburn, regarding sponsorship of the Wild Turkey 5- Mile Run.  Jacqueline, a runner herself, who participates in the annual road race, proceeded to provide the race with its largest sponsorship ever, sponsoring $2,500 from Ernst and Young accounting firm. The proceeds of the race are donated to programs sponsored the Boys and Girls of Greater Salem and the Park and Recreation department.  We cannot thank Jacqueline enough for this generous gift. The Wild Turkey race has raised over $30,000 in 5 years for the kids of Salem.

Waterfront Hotel and Suites
Jon Bercume
The Waterfront Hotel and Suites continues to be the driving force behind the success of the three year old Derby Street Mile road race held each August. This event doubles in numbers each year.  Last year over four hundred runners of all ages participated in the event, a truly intergenerational and family event. The Waterfront Hotel and Suites not only sponsors the race but hosts the post race awards and party in their main banquet room. Thru their hands on sponsorship, this unique one mile race has taken a top spot in summer activities in Salem.  We cannot thank the Waterfront Hotel and Suites enough for being the driving force behind this event.

Morin Fabrication
Mark Morin
Mark Morin made perhaps one of the most important  donations the Senior Center has ever received.  The Center was in need of new railings at our back handicap ramp.  They were broken, falling apart and the concrete walkway needed to be patched.  Mark Morin had his company install brand new railings, as well as patch the walkway with concrete.  We can not thank Mark and his crew enough for all their hard work and donation!  Thank you Mark!

Girl Scouts
Meghan Woodcock
Meg's words:
~I chose to create and plant~Peace Poles in Salem neighborhood parks.~ Peace Poles were planted at Mac Park, Leslie’s Retreat Park, Forest River Park, Winter Island, Camp Naumkeag and Upper Mancel Park. By planting Peace Poles around Salem, the "City of Peace," I hope to touch people with the message of love.~  My goal is to encourage the Salem Community to hope for peace and happiness for people in all lands and cultures.~ If we all choose to make a commitment to world peace by honoring the earth, honoring its people and celebrating the unity of the human spirit, then we can make the world a better place.~~~
~
Boy Scouts
Tom McCarthy
Tom is a member of Salem Boy Scout Troop 83.   Tom strived to receive his Eagle Scout award by working on a project at Camp Naumkeag. Tom’s project at Camp Naumkeag included cutting, painting and installing lattice around all four buildings.  He also planted flowers and installed fencing around the park. Not only did Tom make improvements at Camp Naumkeag, he was responsible for getting the materials donated as part of his project.  Tom earned the top honor of Eagle Scout. Thank You Tom.

Cartoon League
Leo Higgins
When the Cartoon Basketball League was facing a crisis last year and a fee was being charged for the use of school gyms, the program was in jeopardy of ending. Leo Higgins led the way to save the long time basketball program in Salem. Leo organized a number of fundraisers and brought parents together to save the league. Leo is currently the director of the Cartoon Basketball league and continues to fundraise.  His goal is to bring back the .25 cents per week charge for children.  Thank you Leo for saving the league!

Salem Access Television
Patricia Reed
The department felt it was time to provide some well earned and overdue recognition to Pat Reed. Pat has volunteered her time over the years by recording a number of Recreation events including last year’s appreciation night, which was shown continuously on SATV. Pat has been a great resource for the residents of Salem, giving them the opportunity to see and learn about programs and events.  We cannot thank Pat enough for her volunteer efforts to bring recreation events to the public for us.

Salem Common Neighborhood Association
Will St Cyr, Scott Sneddon, Jay and Tim Leonard
~
Will St Cyr and Scott Sneddon are members of the Salem Common Neighborhood Association. Will and Scott repaired and refinished many of the memorial benches on the Common damaged by graffiti and vandalism. They utilized Scott's home workshop to achieve this task. The benches were replaced on the Common after the repairs were completed. Will has promised to continue the task in the spring of repairing the benches
~
Jay and Tim Leonard are "honorary" members of the Association. They have restored the circular bench around the Oak tree near the Tot Lot. The materials were donated by the Association, the labor by Jay and Tim. The project was finished in early summer. However the bench was again damaged by graffiti and vandalism in the fall, and repaired by the Leonard’s. There will be another review of the bench after the winter, and any additional repairs will be dome by Jay and Tim. All of the projects took time, care and considerable effort to ensure the benches will remain useable by the many citizens and visitors to t he Common

The Salem Harbor Alliance Four Alternative Energy adopted the David Beattie Park in 2005. ~David Beattie Park is located on Fort Ave and crosses over to Derby Street. ~The Park had not been cleaned or groomed in years and was in desperate need of attention. ~During the 2005 season, SHARE removed abandoned debris, trash, tree limbs along with mending the fences. ~The maintenance program continued throughout the spring, summer and fall.

In 2006, SHARE decided to continue their community volunteer project by kicking off an Earth Day event.  That year SHARE continued maintaining David Beattie Park by mowing the lawns, having trees removed, planting rose bushes and adding a lovely raised garden. ~The equipment that was used was either borrowed or personal property of the SHARE members.

~In December of 2006, SHARE installed a granite bench dedicated to the Armed Forces. ~In May of 2007, SHARE sponsored a formal dedication of the bench with representatives from all branches of the armed forces in attendance.  The upkeep of the park was continued in 2007.

In 2008, SHARE installed a walking path leading from Derby Street, meandering over to Fort Ave. ~Shortly thereafter, two park benches were purchased by SHARE from the City of Salem park bench donation program.  Both projects were made from recyclable materials.

In April of 2008 as an Earth Day event, SHARE volunteers donated time, money and resources to Pioneer Village for a spring clean-up. ~They rented a wood chipper, brought in tools, community volunteers, and offered breakfast and lunch for all. ~Tree limbs that had littered the grounds for years were chipped and set aside, leaves were raked.  Various other clean-up efforts were also performed under the direction of the Salem Preservation, Inc., John Goff.

SHARE continues to mow and groom the David Beattie Park. Thank you!

Jonathan Booth
Salem Woods
Jonathan Booth: last year he constructed three bridges over streams deep in the Salem Woods, he carried in the materials himself.~ This was a great volunteer effort and if you get a chance to take a walk in the Woods you will have crossed these bridges and could admire the great work done by Jonathan.

Donna Michaud
Salem Dog Shows
Each year Donna puts together two dog shows for the City of Salem.  The dog shows attract dog owners from all over the North Shore.  Donna comes up with amazing themes for these shows and continues to attract large numbers of dogs and their owners.  These shows have become an instiution in Salem, as they are held during Heritage week and Haunted Happenings.  The City of Salem, dog owners and their dogs cannot thank Donna enough for her tireless efforts she puts into planning, directing and creating a great event

Steve Dibble
Recreation programs
Steve Dibble makes great contributions to the Park and Recreation Department in so many ways. Steve is being rewarded tonight for the many years he has directed our chess program, as well as a city wide chess tournament. Each year this program attracts great numbers and receives great praise from parents. Steve continues to help the city in so many ways from being a Boys scout leader to providing guidance and expertise when requested for our playgrounds.

Doreen Thomas
Mary Jane Lee Park
Doreen runs the summer programs at the Mary Jane Lee park here in Salem. She supplies the children that attend the park program with breakfast and lunch. Doreen also gathers arts and crafts supplies and brings the children on fun field trips, like Canobe Lake Park. When your children are with Doreen you know they are safe and are having an enjoyable summer. Doreen is truly a life saver when it comes to the success at Mary Jane Lee Park.

Veann Campbell
Mary Jane Lee
Veann’s dedicated service to our Community is never ending. VeAnn has been the unpaid Director at the St Joseph’s Food Pantry for many years. Veann’s ability to organize volunteers, seek financial donations and work with food brokers has benefited and supported the Summer Lunch program at Mary Jane Lee Park.  Her efforts have also extended to over 160 seniors in our city.  Veanns passion and drive has made these programs successful and has helped so many members of our community.  The Salem community is luck to have her.

Zeke Berman
Lafayette Park
Zeke came to Doug Bollen a year ago and asked if he could be in charge of the flag at Lafayette Park. Zeke was given a key and has been putting up and taking down the flag each day.  He bought rope when it was necessary and continues to clean the park on a regular basis. The city needs more like Zeke Berman’s who take things into their hands to make this a better place to live.
