May 4,2010
SalemRecycles
Meeting of Tuesday, May 4, 2010

Attendees: Julie Rose, Erin Huggard, Marcia Lambert, Nancy Gilberg, Katie Giddings, Susan Yochelson, Penny Neal, Liz Vago, Megan Sampson, Jennifer Percy, Paul Marquis.

Introductions were given as there were several new attendees including Paul Marquis, the city’s energy and sustainability liaison to the Renewable Energy Task Force and visitor Nancy Gilberg.

Paul explained about the development of a designation for “Green Businesses” in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce.  There will be a point-based checklist that businesses must comply with.  There was further discussion about the development of a “Green Award” for businesses.

There was a discussion of how “Clean Salem Green Salem” went this year.  In the future, the Salem Charter School wants to be involved.  A donation was given to the Boys and Girls Club and St. Peters more than broke even.  Bikes not Bombs received 24 bikes which by their standards not a lot.  However, for a first time presence in the event, it was deemed successful.  For next year, SalemRecycles will have to increase their promotional efforts and make sure that more volunteers are on hand.

The “Green” Event at Salem State where Julie Rose was a featured speaker was a success.  There were 40 – 50 in attendance.

The Living Green Fair at the Town Hall will be held on Saturday, June 19 from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm.  Volunteers are as follows:

9:30 – noon – Jennifer (Confirmed)
                Lynn (confirmed)
                Liz (?)
                Penny (?)
                Erin (?)

Noon – 3:00 pm –        Katie (may be a little late)
                        Marcia (Confirmed)
                        Erin (Confirmed)

The website needs a good update especially in regard to Recycling FAQs, activities and awards for SalemRecycles – Year 2, and recycling resources.  There was discussion about getting a volunteer to do a new Green web site through an ad/article in the Salem Gazette.
The Perfect Pick-up will go until the end of the year thanks to the generosity of Northshore Recycled Fibers.  Thus far, several hundred have registered to be considered for the “Perfect Pick-up” award.

At the next meeting, we will cover the Strategic Plan, Recycling at the Point, and Nominations for SalemRecycles President and Vice-President.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 6:30 pm at the City Hall annex.
