Salem introduces a pilot program for expanded e-waste recycling as part of Clean Salem, Green Salem

SALEM, MA –As part of the Clean Salem, Green Salem event on the Common May 2, the City is initiating a three- month pilot for an expanded e-waste collection program.    The new program will allow residents to drop off e-waste items, such as iPods, batteries, battery back-up units, car audio equipment, cell phones,  digital cameras, gaming equipment, flash drives, flat screen TVs and computers, power cords, etc. for future recycling.  All personally identifiable information will be destroyed through this recycling program.  Northside Carting the City’s trash haulers is partnering with Winfield Allied a leader in e-waste recycling to sponsor this program.  At the conclusion of the three months, the City will determine if this concept is practical to continue. The City will receive a per pound fee for all items collected.  For a full listing of acceptable items go to Salem.com\recycling and click on e-waste pilot program.  Collection of e-waste not only reduces the amount of materials to be incinerated; it re-cycles many valuable items such as copper and eliminates the health and environmental risks created when these items are broken apart and the toxic chemicals inside are released.

From 9-1 on Saturday May 2 there will be a dumpster available on the Winter Street side of the Common to collect these expanded e-waste items.  From May 4 through July 30, there will be recepticles for this expanded e-waste program available at City Hall, City Hall Annex 120 Washington St., Council on Aging at 5 Broad St. and the DPS at 5 Jefferson Avenue during normal business hours.  Please contact Julie Rose at 978-619-5679 with any questions.

The current sticker program, initiated in 2004 will continue in its current format.  Items such as CRT televisions and computers, air conditioners, refrigerators and freezers can be disposed of by purchasing a $20 sticker and arranging for pick-up through DPS at 5 Jefferson Avenue at (978) 744-3302.  White Goods pick-up for washers, dryers, water heaters, etc. can be arranged by contacting Northside Carting at (978) 745-0645.
