Presentation of Collins Cove Living Shoreline Project

How can Salem use green solutions to build resilience to climate change impacts?

The City of Salem received a Green Infrastructure for Coastal Resilience Grant from the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management to design a “living shoreline” along the path at Collins Cove that runs parallel to Webb Street. This ecological restoration project was selected based on Salem’s Climate Vulnerability Assessment & Adaptation Plan and subsequent Green Infrastructure Feasibility Assessment.

To stabilize this section of eroding shoreline and increase its capacity to absorb wave action, the City proposes to plant native salt marsh grasses and install biodegradable coir logs. The benefits of this green solution include lower construction and maintenance costs than hard coastal structures, such as engineered seawalls or revetments, and an expansion of wildlife habitat.

The City, along with Salem Sound Coastwatch and Chester Engineers, will describe "living shorelines" and the proposed shoreline restoration and stabilization project for Collins Cove on Thursday, February 16 at 7:00 P.M. at the Bentley School Cafetorium at 25 Memorial Drive.
