Canal Street Roadway Project - Neighborhood Preconstruction Information Meeting

Event Date:
Tuesday, June 21, 2016 - 7:00pm

The City of ‪Salem will hold a public pre-construction meeting to discuss the upcoming roadway improvement project on Canal Street. The meeting will be held at 7pm on June 21st at the Enterprise Center at SSU's Central Campus.

This project will reconstruct Canal Street from the Mill Street intersection to the intersection with Jefferson and Loring Avenues. The project will start in July and be completed in 24 months. Work will consist of the removal and replacement of the top 18-inches of the roadway, including addressing the area of settlement in the block between Ocean Avenue and Forest Street. New street light equipment will be installed in each intersection and pedestrian access improvements, including new ADA compliant sidewalks, crosswalks, and handicap ramps, will be constructed.

The northern segment of the Salem/Marblehead off-street bike path, from the Mill Street intersection to a connection with Canal Street near Roslyn Street, is also included in the project. The remaining portion of the bike path, from Roslyn Street to the connection with the existing path at Canal Street, is currently under design and should be constructed within the timeframe of the roadway project.

This meeting will provide you an opportunity to learn more about the Project and what construction activities are planned as this very important city project commences. The construction management team, consisting of City representatives, the MassDOT resident Engineer, and the contractor, McCourt construction, will present what to expect during construction, the project schedule and sequencing of work, as well as traffic and truck route impacts.
