The City of Salem, in partnership with Waste Management, are pleased to announce Shannon Murphy as the 2023 recipient of the City of Salem and Waste Management Scholarship. Each year, the program offers a $1000 scholarship to a student pursuing a college or graduate level program focused on environmental sustainability.

Shannon was awarded the scholarship for her essay, The City of Salem and Sustainability, in which she proposes that the City institutes a ban on single use plastics, furthering its commitment to environmental sustainability and climate resilience.

“I’m pleased to offer my congratulations to Shannon on winning this award for her well-researched and forward-thinking essay, and I wish her the best of luck as she furthers her education in environmental sustainability,” said Mayor Dominick Pangallo. “I’d also like to thank Waste Management for making this scholarship opportunity available.”

Shannon grew up in Salem and graduated from Salem Academy Charter School in 2019. She is a rising senior at Northeastern University pursuing a Bachelors of Arts degree in International Affairs and Environmental Studies.
