Delivery of New Trash and Recycling Toters Starts This Week
October 5-16 Waste Management will deliver new curbside toters City-wide
SALEM, MA – Starting on Monday, October 5, Waste Management – Salem’s new trash and recycling collection contractor, will begin delivering new wheeled carts to all households in Salem. Each household will get two carts: a 64-gallon black one for trash and a 96-gallon blue one for single-stream recycling.
The company expects it will take about two weeks to deliver all of the carts. If a resident has not received their carts by October 19, they should contact the City at 978-619-5673.
The carts are the property of the City of Salem and must be kept at the residence to which they are delivered. It is recommended that residents’ write their address on the cart. Residents may be responsible for replacement costs for carts.
Carts should not be used until automated curbside collection begins on the week of November 2. On that week, automated collection will begin city-wide, as will every-other-week recycling. Each street will be assigned to either a “blue week” or a “green week” and the color of the resident’s recycling cart’s lid will indicate their week. A detailed calendar of which street is on which week will be mailed to all households and posted online later this month. Some trash and recycling collection days will be changing starting November 2; more information about which streets will have new collection days will be issued later in October, as well.
Old trash barrels can be used for yard waste or dropped off for recycling at the Department of Public Services at 5 Jefferson Avenue between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, for the entire month of November. Barrels can also be dropped off at North Shore Recycled Fibers at 53 Jefferson Avenue. Old recycling bins are useful for storage and for carting items, however they can also be recycled at North Shore Recycled Fibers or the Department of Public Services during the hours above in the month of November.
