Abbott Square

Major General Stephen Abbott served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. He was born on July 1st, 1749. During the war, he served as the Captain of Scouts who were attached to General Washington’s Headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Major General Abbot is most famously known for founding the 2nd Corps Cadets in 1781. He also served as Overseer of the Poor in Salem after the war.

He died on July 9th, 1813 and his remains are buried in the St. Peter’s Church Cemetery in Salem.

His square is located at the corner of Brown and New Liberty Streets, dedicated in his honor.
