Sergeant John J. Butler, a native of 18 Albion Street, served in the US Army during World War I. He was born on September 20th, 1893 in Salem. Prior to serving, he worked as a chauffeur. Sergeant Butler initially enlisted on May 9th, 1918 to 6th Company, Main Training Depot of Camp Hancock, Georgia. He was later transferred on September 9th, 1918 to Company C, 36th MG Battalion, 12th Division.

Tragically, he died of disease in Camp Devens, Massachusetts on September 28th, 1918. He was the son of William and Bridget Butler and brother to Pierce and Mary.

His square is located on the corner of Butler and Ord Streets, dedicated in his honor.
