Coyne Square

Charles L. Coyne, a native of Bay View Avenue, served in the United States Merchant Marines during World War II. He was born on April 5th, 1916 in Lynn. After graduating from high school, he attended the US Coast Guard Academy in Fort Trumbull, Connecticut. He later re-enlisted the service with the Merchant Marines on September 19th, 1942 and served as chief mate of the Army Transport Freighter USAT Oneida, a ship carrying weapons and supplies to Europe.

Tragically, he was killed on May 4th, 1943 when the Oneida went down in the Atlantic Ocean.  

His square was approved by the City Council on April 27th, 2017, which is located on Bay View Avenue, dedicated in his honor.
