PFC CravatasPrivate First Class Frederick J. Cravatas, a native of 25 Boardman Street in Salem, served in the US Army during World War II. He was born on February 12th, 1925 in Salem. Prior to serving, he worked for Daniel Lowes. Private First Class Cravatas initially enlisted in Boston on March 30th, 1943 and served with Company K, 242nd Infantry, 42nd Division. He fought in action against the enemy throughout the European Theatre.

Tragically, he was killed in action on March 15, 1945 in France. He was the son of Peter and Marion Cravatas, and brother to Joseph, also a WWII veteran.

His square was approved by the City Council on April 14th, 2016 and is located at the corner of Hawthorne and Essex Streets, dedicated in his honor.
