Dalton Parkway

The parkway is named for Brigadier General Samuel Dalton, a Salem native who served in the Civil War and as Adjunct General of the State of Massachusetts. Born on June 25th, 1840 to Thomas and Sarah (Newell) Dalton, he first served as a Private in the Salem Cadets in 1861. Later that year, he enlisted into Company D, 14th Massachusetts Regiment to serve in the Civil War. He would eventually ascend to the rank of First Lieutenant in the 14th, which became the First Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. In December of 1881, he was promoted to Colonel and on January 4th, 1883 became Adjunct General. He served in the position until January 5th, 1905. 

The parkway was officially dedicated in his honor on June 14th, 1925 and intersects Broad, Flint, and Essex Streets.
