HennesseyQuartermaster First Class John E. Hennessey served in the US Navy during World War I. He was born on December 29th, 1898 in Peabody. Prior to serving, he worked for Riker-Jaynes drug store and lived on 38 Putnam Street. Quartermaster First Class Hennessey initially enlisted on April 16th, 1917 to Naval Training Camp in Marblehead, Massachusetts. He was later transferred on June 8th, 1917 to Camp Burrage, Bumpkin Island, June 25th, 1917 to the USS Malay, and January 4th, 1918 to Submarine Chaser 260.

Tragically, he died of disease in Fort Lyon, Colorado on June 26th, 1919. He was the son of David and Helen (O’Keefe) Hennessey and brother to Catherine, David, Helen, and Philip of Salem.

His square is located at the corner of Hanson and Varney Streets, dedicated in his honor.
