Private Peter J. Leonard, a native of 32 Ward Street, served in the US Army during World War I. He was born on July 4th, 1889 in Salem and worked as a shoe worker prior to serving. Private Leonard initially enlisted on May 26th, 1918 to the 152nd Depot Brigade. He was later transferred on June 21st, 1918 to Company H, 314th Infantry, 79th Division and arrived in the theatre of war on July 8th, 1918. He was wounded on September 28th, 1918 in France, although the severity of the wound is undetermined.

He was again wounded on Hill 328, Chaumont-devant-Damvillers, France on November 10th, 1918. Tragically, he died from his wounds two days later on November 12th, 1918, one day after the war ended. He was the son of Thomas and Mary (Maguire) Leonard of Salem and husband to Anna Marie of Beverly.

His square is located at the intersection of Congress, Ward, and Peabody Streets, dedicated in his honor.
