LochmanLieutenant Junior Grade Dean E. Lochman Jr., a native of 354 Essex Street and a graduate of Salem High School, served in the US Navy as an aviator during World War I. Born on November 10th, 1897 in Salem, he worked as a salesman. Lieutenant Junior Grade Lochman initially enlisted on February 11th, 1916 to Battery E, 2nd Corps Cadets, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia. He was later transferred to Battery F, 1st Field Artillery, Massachusetts National Guard, where he served on the Mexican Border from June to November of 1916. He was later discharged on May 25th, 1917 so he could reenlist in the US Navy Flying Corps.

Dean reentered the military on May 9th, 1917 and reported for duty on July 23rd, 1917. He was later assigned to the Naval Aviation Detachment of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, then transferred on September 20th, 1917 to Naval Air Station Pensacola; February 19th, 1918 to Royal Naval Air Station, Yarmouth, England; August 1st. 1918 to Naval Air Station, Queenstown, Ireland; December 28th, 1918 to New York; and February 6th, 1919 to Coco Solo, Canal Zone, Panama. He remained overseas from January 15th, 1918 to December 28th, 1918.

Tragically, he died in an airplane accident at Coco Solo, Canal Zone, Panama on May 19th, 1919. He was the son of Dean Edmond and Annelle (Smith) Lochman of Salem, brother to Lydia of Wenham, and husband to Evelyn Frances Bowker.

His square is located at the intersection of Bridge, Lynn, and River Streets, dedicated in his honor.
