Private John V. McDonald, a native of 22 Liberty Street, served in the US Army during World War I. He was born on February 19th, 1893 in Salem and worked as a clerk for Pitman & Brown prior to serving. Private McDonald initially entered the military on September 4th, 1918 to the 152nd Depot Brigade of Camp Upton, New York.

Tragically, he died from disease in Camp Upton, New York on September 22nd, 1918. He was the son of William and Mary Josephine (Reardon) McDonald and brother to Abbie, Julia and Catherine. His square is located at the corner of Essex and Webb Streets, dedicated in his honor.
