Private Louis W. McManus served in the Massachusetts National Guard during World War 1. He was born on October 24th, 1895 in Peabody. Prior to his military service, he worked as a leather worker. Private McManus initially enlisted on June 25th, 1915 to Company H, 8th Infantry, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia, where he served on the Mexican Border. He officially reported for duty on July 25th, 1917 and mustered on August 1st, 1917. He was later transferred to Company H, 2nd Infantry, Massachusetts National Guard (Company H, 104th Infantry, 26th Division). He arrived overseas on October 5th, 1917.

Tragically, he died from an accident near Vignot, France on May 11th, 1918. He was the son of John and Julia (Ward) McManus of Newark, New Jersey and brother to Julie, John, James, Arthur, and Albert, who served on the USS Brooklyn and USS Jenkins during World War I.

His square is located at the intersection of Collins, Spring, and Webb Streets, dedicated in his honor.
