Prusak Square

PrusakPrivate Wladyslaw Prusak served in the US Army during World War I. He was born on October 18th, 1887 in Poland. Prior to his service, he worked as a shoe worker and lived on 173 Derby Street. Private Prusak initially enlisted on May 30th, 1918 to the 21st Recruit Company, General Service Infantry of Fort Slocum, New York. He was then transferred on June 3rd, 1918 to Company C, 2nd Corps Artillery Park of Camp Jackson, South Carolina; June 15th, 1918 to 156th Depot Brigade; and June 28th, 1918 to Company I, 321st Infantry, 81st Division. He arrived in the theatre of war on July 31st, 1918.

Tragically, he was killed in action by sniper fire in Hautecort, France on November 11th, 1918, the last day of the Great War. He was the brother of Francisca of Salem and his remains are buried in Thaiucourt, France.

His square is located at the corner of Fort Avenue and Webb Street, dedicated in his honor.
