Sutherland Square

Private Ronald I. Sutherland, a native of 11 Pearl Street in Salem, served in the US Army during World War I. He was born on July 20th, 1893 in Allston, Massachusetts. Prior to serving, he worked as a grocery clerk. Private Sutherland initially enlisted on April 28th, 1918 to the 151st Depot Brigade. He was later transferred on May 24th, 1918 to Company I, 301st Infantry, 75th Division; July 31st, 1918 to Company D, 163rd Infantry, 41st Division; August 9th, 1918 to Company F, 59th Infantry, 4th Division. He arrived overseas on July 6th, 1918.

Tragically, he died on October 6th, 1918 from wounds sustained during the Meuse-Argonne offensive in France. He was the son of George and Jane (McLeod) Sutherland and brother to William, George, Florence McKay, and Jane Fraser of Salem.

His square is located at the corner of Bridge and St. Peter Streets, dedicated in his honor.
