Petty Officer Second Class Wilfred P. Sweeney served in the US Navy as a Ship’s Cook during World War II. He initially enlisted in January of 1942.

Tragically, Petty Officer Second Class Sweeney was killed on the USS Luce when it sunk from a Kamikaze attack near Okinawa on May 4th, 1945. His remains were never recovered, but he is honored by the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. His awards included the American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and the Purple Heart.

His square was dedicated in his honor on October 10th, 1988 and is located at the corner of Flint and Oak Streets.
