Private John J. Twarog, a native of 94 Essex Street, served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II. Born on May 26th, 1912, Private Twarog initially enlisted into the Army on July 28th, 1942 in Fort Devens, Massachusetts. John later served in Europe with I Squadron, 121st Army Air Forces between November 5th, 1943 and August 22nd, 1945. He would return home safely and was honorably discharged on September 23rd, 1945. His awards include the Good Conduct Medal, the European–African–Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, and four Bronze Service Stars.

John passed away in September 7th, 1994. His remains are buried at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts.

His square was dedicated in his honor on March 23rd, 1995, which is located at the corner of Congress and Derby Streets.
