Message from Mayor Kim Driscoll about COVID-19 in Salem

This is Mayor Kim Driscoll with an important update about Salem’s efforts to respond to COVID-19.

This evening, when the Massachusetts Department of Public Health issues their weekly report, Salem will still be in the “yellow” designation, however – based on case counts increasing the last few days, we anticipate it is highly likely we will be in the “red” designation next Thursday. Salem, like the rest of our Commonwealth and our country, is experiencing a rapid increase in new covid cases once again. I want you to know that our city has been preparing, pro-actively, since May for this eventuality. Among dozens of other steps, we’ve instituted free covid testing, stockpiled PPE, optimized HVAC systems, and readied a team of over 200 volunteers to help those in need.

But you have a role to play in this, too. We will not be able to get our case numbers back down and be able to fully reopen schools and businesses without your help.

Here are the three simple things we need you to do, starting now:

First, avoid social gatherings indoors with others. From our contact tracing it’s clear that the vast majority of new cases are from small family gatherings and celebrations. As hard as it is with the holidays approaching, now is not the time to gather together with others.

Second, wear a mask. Salem has mandatory mask zones downtowns, in our parks, and in businesses. But you should wear your mask everywhere - including if you’re in someone else’s house. And ask those who have to come into your house - whether they’re contractors or family - to wear one, too.

Lastly, get a test. Salem has two sites offering free covid tests almost every day. You can find the locations and hours at www.salem.com/stopthespread. The test takes minutes and the results are typically emailed to you within 24 hours. You don’t need to show proof of insurance or citizenship, and you don’t need to be symptomatic. We’re asking every Salem resident to commit to getting one of these free tests at least twice in November and twice in December.

All it takes is each of us doing these three simple steps over the next several weeks, and we can get this virus back under control.

To date, 44 of our neighbors have lost their lives to covid, and more than 2,00 have lost their livelihoods. It’s on each and everyone one of us to take these three simple steps to stop the spread of covid here in Salem. Les presento 3 pasos simples que necesitemos que hagan comenzando ahora: Primero: eviten juntarse en grupos de adentro con otros. De la información que recibimos de esos que resultaron positivos es claro que la razón mayor de casos nuevos es por razón de actividades con grupos de personas y celebraciones. A pesar de que se acercan los días de fiestas, estos no son los tiempos de juntarse con otros. Segundo: use su mascarilla. La ciudad de Salem tiene zonas de uso de mascarilla mandatarias en el centro de la ciudad y dentro de los negocios. Usted todavía debe de usar su mascarilla en todas partes incluso si esta dentro del lugar de otra persona. También pídales a esos que entran a su casa si son contratistas o miembros de familias que usen una. Últimamente, hágase la prueba. Salem tiene dos locales ofreciendo pruebas gratis casi todos los días. Usted puede encontrar los locales y las horas visitando www.salem.com/stopthespread. La prueba toma solo minutes y los resultados llegan dentro de 24 horas. No necesita ensenar prueba de seguro médico o ciudadanía ni debe tener síntomas. Le estamos pidiendo a todos los residentes de Salem que se hagan la prueba por lo menos dos veces en noviembre y dos veces en diciembre. Esto es solo lo que debemos hacer juntos en las próximas semanas y mantendremos esta programación bajo control. Hasta el día de hoy, 44 de nuestros vecinos han fallecido debido al covid y mas de 2 mil han perdido su sustento.
