Norman/Chestnut/Summer Roundabout Installation Overnight May 19th

Pilot will test new intersection configuration to improve traffic flow and safety

The City of Salem is scheduled to carry out the installation of a pilot of a traffic roundabout at the intersection of Norman Street, Chestnut Street, and Summer Street. The work is scheduled to occur on Sunday, May 19th beginning at 8:00 p.m., weather permitting. HiWay Safety Systems is the contractor installing all the striping. Department of Public Services' employees will be installing all the signage and other vertical features.

It is anticipated that it will take one night to complete the installation work, however there is always the possibility that work will take longer than anticipated. Police details will be present during the installation, as well as after it is completed, in order to direct motorists as they acclimate to the new configuration.

Observations and data collection will take place to evaluate the operation and functionality of the roundabout and determine if any immediate adjustments need to be made. If it is functioning as intended, and after a brief normalization period, additional traffic data will be collected to monitor changes to speeds and overall motorist behavior. If the pilot roundabout improve traffic conditions and safety at the intersection the City will proceed with plans to make the alteration permanent.
