Trash Regulations & Hazardous Items

  1. Effective November 1, 2015, you must ONLY use City issued toter or City orange overflow bags. 

  2. Place trash at curb by 7 am the day of pickup, not before 6pm the night preceding collection. If you are using City orange overflow bags, they should be placed curbside between 6 - 7am the morning of your pick-up.

  3. If you have a bulk item such as a mattress, box spring, home furnishing (couch/chair); please call  Waste Management at least 24hours in advance at 800-972-4545 press the number 4 to schedule a pick up. (Waste Management hours are Monday thru Friday 7:30 a.m to 5 p.m). Bulk items will be picked up  on your recycling day only. NO construction waste or demolition debris.

  4. NO tires, flourescent bulbs, tv’s, computers, propane tanks, paints, batteries, used motor oil, chemicals or oils. Save for Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. Salem hosts a HHWD the last Saturday in September. Salem residents can also partcipate in Beverly's HHWD the 4th Saturday in April. Call the Board of Health at 978-741-1800 for additional information.

  5. We DO NOT pick up clean outs. If you move or clean out the house, it is your responsibility to dispose of large amounts of debris. There are many options available. Please check the Yellow Pages for local listings under "Trash Removal".
