Trash Regulations & Hazardous Items

  1. Effective November 1, 2015, you must ONLY use City issued toter or City orange overflow bags. 

  2. Place trash at curb by 7 am the day of pickup, not before 6pm the night preceding collection. If you are using City orange overflow bags, they should be placed curbside before 7am the morning of your pick-up.

  3. If you have a bulk item such as a toilet, gas grill (without tank), home furnishing (couch/chair); please call  Waste Management at least 24hours in advance at 800-972-4545 press the number 4 to schedule a pick up. (Waste Management hours are Monday thru Friday 7:30 a.m to 5 p.m). Bulk items will be picked up  on your recycling day only. NO construction waste or demolition debris. 

  4. If you have a mattress or a box spring, please contact Tough Stuff Recycling to schedule a curbside pick up. Schedule online at https://order.toughstuffrecycling.com or by calling 1-800-273-4137. Mattress bags will be supplied by the City. They can be picked up at the City Hall Annex Engineering Department, 2nd floor 98 Washington Street during open business hours: Monday-Wednesday 8-4, Thursday 8-7, and Friday 8-12. 

  5. NO tires, flourescent bulbs, tv’s, computers, propane tanks, paints, batteries, used motor oil, chemicals or oils. Save for Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. The Salem Board of Health hosts a HHWD that is open to both Salem and Beverly Residents. Please visit the Salem Board of Health Website, https://www.salem.com/health, or call them at 978-619-5654 for more information. Salem residents can also partcipate in Beverly's HHWD the 4th Saturday in April.

  6. We DO NOT pick up clean outs. If you move or clean out the house, it is your responsibility to dispose of large amounts of debris. There are many options available. Please check the Yellow Pages for local listings under "Trash Removal".

  8. Effective January 23, 2023.  A fee of $20 per item will be charged for all bulk items, mattresses and box springs to be picked up curbside.  Financial hardship request should be directed to the Waste Reduction Coordinator in the Engineering Department for consideration.
