Shared Streets Program

In the summer of 2020, funded with a grant from the Lawrence & Lillian Solomon Foundation, the City of Salem worked with Neighborways Design to implement a Shared Streets Pilot. The pilot identified streets across the City for traffic calming treatments and vehicle diversions. The goals of the pilot were:

  • Lower traffic speeds and volumes
  • Provide more space for safer physical distancing
  • Create a sense of place where people feel more comfortable and welcome walking and biking
  • Collect data and public feedback

Data was collected before, during, and after the pilot re: traffic speed and volumes, and residents and visitors were surveyed about their experience with the pilot.

The long-term goal is to expand the program to other streets and use the short-term temporary changes to test long-term, permanent changes to the roadways.

More information about the project can be found on the Shared Streets Public Input page.
