Transportation Projects and Planning
The Traffic and Parking Department is not the primary Department in charge of street and roadway projects. We work closely with our colleagues in the City Engineer’s Office and the Department of Public Services to design and build these projects, providing input from staff and from the Traffic and Parking Commission. For bike-specific projects, we coordinate with our colleagues from the Planning and Community Development Department who staff the Bicycle Advisory Committee.
Current Projects:
- Jefferson Avenue/Willson Street Intersection Improvement Project: The City is engaging with contractors to install a full traffic signal at this location in addition to improving the pedestrian accessibility and roadway lighting.
- North Street Safety Enhancement Project: Working with Toole Design to implement safety improvements along North Street (Route 114) from the Peabody line to the North Street Bridge.
- Fort Avenue/Columbus Avenue Intersection Re-Design Project: Working with McMahon Associates to develop design plans along Fort Avenue where it intersects with Winter Island Rd, Columbus Ave, Columbus Sq and Memorial Drive.
- Fort Avenue Multi-Use Path: As part of the ongoing implementation of the City's Bicycle Master Plan, a bi-directional multi-use path was striped on Fort Avenue. These lanes connect to the recently completed Harbor Connector Path.
- Summer/Norman/Chesnut Roundabout: Initially implemented as a temporary pilot project, the Summer/Norman/Chestnut roundabout is moving into the final phase. Designs for full civil reconstruction of the intersection were completed and construction began Fall 2021.
