Captain Frederick W. Arnold served as an US Army Firefighter during World War I. He was born on May 17th, 1892. He worked as a firefighter in Salem assigned to 303rd Fire Truck, Chemical Engine Company No. 1. Captain Arnold initially enlisted on December 15th, 1917.

Tragically, he died of pneumonia in Camp Dix, New Jersey on April 12th, 1918. He was the son of Francis and Annie Arnold and brother to Mildred, Anna, Mary, and Marion.

His square is located at the corner of School and Dunlap Streets, dedicated in his honor.
