"The Twenty-Third Regiment Association, established ten years after the original muster of its members, held a reunion on September 28, 1905 to dedicate a commemorative memorial to the heroic efforts and character of the men in the regiment.  Created from a 58-ton granite boulder, originally located on Salem Neck, the boulder was placed at the end of Winter Street on the Salem Common.  The bronze plaque, created by the Murdoch Company in Boston, lists thirteen engagements of the regiment during the Civil War and lists each of the ten companies in Massachusetts that were part of the 23rd Volunteer Infantry; the back of the boulder includes a bronze corps badge of the 18th Army Corps."  (Peabody Essex Museum)
