Sergeant First Class Joseph Couture served in the US Army during World War I. He was born on November 25th, 1876 in Salem. Sergeant First Class Couture initially enlisted on September 5th, 1899 to Company C, 42nd Regiment, United States Volunteer Infantry. He served in the Philippine Islands during that time, and was later discharged on June 17th, 1901. He later reenlisted on September 18th, 1903 and assigned to Medical Depot. He was promoted to Sergeant on November 13th, 1918 and Sergeant First Class on February 4th, 1919.

His service continued until he tragically passed from disease at Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco, California on July 4th, 1920. He was the son of Gervais and Philomena (Trembly) Couture and brother to John, William Henry, and Alma.

His square is located at the corner of Cabot and Cedar Streets, dedicated in his honor.
