DowdellPrivate Charles R. Dowdell served in the US Army during World War I. He was born on April 9th, 1896 in Woburn. Prior to serving, he worked as a milk wagon driver and lived at 49 Lawrence Street. Private Dowdell initially enlisted on April 28th, 1918 to 151st Depot Brigade. He was later transferred on May 24th, 1918 to Company B, 302th Infantry, 76th Division: June 15th, 1918 to 151st Depot Brigade; July 2nd, 1918 to Company K, 303rd Infantry, 76th Division; August 5th, 1918 to Company C, 162nd Infantry, 41st Division; and August 14th, 1918 to Company L, 26th Infantry, 1st Division. He arrived overseas on July 8th, 1918.

Tragically, he was killed in action near Arietal Farm, France on October 5th, 1918. He was the son of John and Annie (Murphy) Dowdell and brother to Vincent, Albert, Malda, and John (served in Navy) of Salem.

His square is located at the intersection of Cabot, Hazel, and Roslyn Streets, dedicated in his honor.
