Robert F. Griffin, a native of Columbus Avenue, served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was born on November 20th, 1925 and graduated from Salem High School in 1943. That same year he enlisted in the Navy.

While serving as a “belly gunner” in a bomber, his plane went down over the Philippines on July 9th, 1945. Tragically, no one survived the crash. No further information is available. 

His square was approved by the City Council on April 27th, 2017, which is located at the corner of Columbus and Bay View Avenue, dedicated in his honor.
