GrovesPrivate Clayton Dexter Groves, a native of 32 Beach Avenue, served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He was born on September 25th, 1924 in Lynn. He graduated from Salem High School in 1941 and later attended Dean Academy. In response to the attack on Pearl Harbor, Private Groves enlisted in the Marine Corps on January 5th, 1942.

Tragically, he was killed in action on October 25th, 1942 while serving with Company M, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division during the invasion of Guadalcanal. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal. Private Groves was the son of Dexter and Faustina Groves of Salem.  

His square was approved by the City Council on April 27th, 2017, which is located at the corner of High and Beach Streets, dedicated in his honor.
