HarkinsPrivate Edward F. Harkins, a native of 41 Grove Street, served in the Massachusetts National Guard during World War I. He was born on May 22nd, 1895 in Salem. Private Harkins initially enlisted on February 25th, 1916 to Company H, 8th Infantry where he served on the Mexican Border. He officially reported for duty on July 25th, 1917 and mustered on August 5th, 1917. He was then later transferred to Company H, 104th Infantry, 26th Division and arrived overseas on October 5th, 1917.

Tragically, he was killed in action near Vignot, France on May 14th, 1918. He was the son of Dennis and Mary Josephine (Moran) Harkins, brother to Grace, and nephew to William Moran of Salem.

His square is located at the corner of Grove and Mason Streets, dedicated in his honor.
