HowellPrivate Percy M. Howell served in the US Army during World War I. He was born on May 17th, 1887 in Shediac, New Brunswick. Prior to serving, he worked as a leather worker and lived on 5 Leavitt Street. Private Howell initially enlisted on June 26th, 1918 to the 153rd Depot Brigade. He was later transferred on July 20th, 1918 to Company E, 312th Engineers, 87th Division. He arrived overseas on August 24th, 1918.

Tragically, he died of pneumonia in France on October 24th, 1918. He was the son of George and Katherine Howell of Salem and brother to Mrs. D. MacTavish and James of Salem, and Mrs. George D. Rix of Pasadena, California.

His square is located at the corner of Oakland and Balcomb Streets, dedicated in his honor.
