JolyPrivate First Class Freddy J. Joly served in the Massachusetts National Guard during World War I. He was born on December 10th, 1897 in Salem. Prior to serving, he worked as a millwright and lived on 2 Woodbury Court. Private First Class Joly initially enlisted on April 2nd, 1917 to Battery D, 1st Field Artillery, Massachusetts National Guard (Battery D, 101st Field Artillery, 26th Division). He officially reported for duty on July 25th, 1917 and mustered on August 4th, 1917.

Tragically, he died from an accidental gun explosion in France on November 4th, 1918. His remains are buried in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery in Romagne, France. He was the son of Hiram and Florence (Therriault) Joly and brother to Simeon, Florence, Euclid, and Leo.

His square is located at the corner of Charles Street and Pacific Avenue, dedicated in his honor.
