mackeyGunnery Sergeant Charles T. Mackey served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He grew up on Maple Street in Salem and attended the Essex Agricultural High School prior to serving. He would go on to serve with the 86th Bombardment Group. Tragically, Gunnery Sergeant Mackey was killed in a plane crash while training at Key Field, Mississippi on December 11th, 1942. His plane reportedly collided with another while in mid-air, causing it to crash in a nearby pasture.  He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert L. Mackey of Salem.

His square was approved by the City Council on September 28th, 2017 and is located at the intersection of Canal and Broadway Street, dedicated in his honor.
