Captain Henry C. Nichols, a native of 27 Cross Street, served in the US Navy during World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. He was born in Salem on February 23rd, 1897. Captain Nichols initially entered the military on October 14th, 1918. Captain Nichols survived a plane crash that occurred on November 4th, 1955 in Holyoke, Massachusetts. The plane had recently left Westover Air Force Base and was bound for Bolling Air Force Base in Washington DC.

His services to the City of Salem include establishing the Captain William Driver Memorial, serving as Executive Director of the Salem Chamber of Commerce and Executive Director for the Boys & Girls Club, held a volunteer seat on Salem commissions and boards, and took part in fighting the Great Salem Fire at the age of 17. He also authored two novels: “Eastward Around the World on the Barque Emerald” and “Bewitched in Historic Salem.”

He passed away on March 23rd, 1977. He was the husband of Agnes. His square was approved in his honor by the City Council on September 22nd, 2016, and is located at the corner of Washington and Federal Streets.
