Private Michael J. Rabbitt, a native of 18 Rice Street, served in the US Army during World War I. He was born on October 18, 1895 in Salem. Prior to his military service, he attended St. John’s Preparatory School in Salem. He also worked as a bookkeeper in Watkins, New York. Private Rabbitt initially enlisted on February 24th, 1918 in Watkins, New York to the 151st Depot Brigade. He was later transferred on March 16th, 1918 to Company L, 307th Infantry, 77th Division. He arrived overseas on April 7th, 1918.

Tragically, he was killed in action in St. Juvin, France on October 12, 1918. His remains are buried at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery in Romagne, France. He was the son of Michael Joseph and Delia (Kelly) Rabbitt and brother to James, Thomas, John, Francis, and Margaret.

His square is located at the corner of Bridge and Pleasant Streets, dedicated in his honor.
